This set of 8 stories had robots, talking dogs, and cities far in the future but it didn't seem so much like a work of science fiction. The Webster family sets the humans on a course to discover new things in the future. Jenkins the robot is bright and talkative and helps to steer a course into the future as well. Nathanial, the talking dog, has insight into people and how they behave.
The first couple stories were a bit slow and confusing, but the later stories had a clear story line and interes

This has been a reread of the classic fix-up novel, City by Clifford D. Simak. It's built up of stories that were published back in the mid 1940's with a short introduction to each chapter. According to the novel, each of the stories were dog myths of a time long gone. Dogs no longer remember man and thing they are themselves the supreme intelligence. Fantastic classic sci-fi. It is slow and dry, but given the premise (history/mythology stories told by dogs), that style makes sense. Says a lot about humanity, warfare/violence, philosophy, potential development of technology/societies/capabilities, etc. You can really tell the author loved dogs, that shines through.
