Until researching the review for this book I hadn’t realised what a complex and contradictory person Arthur Conan Doyle was. Published in 1912, “The Lost World”, is the first book in Doyle’s the Professor Challenger series. Challenger is a zoologist who returns from an expedition to the Amazon basin with flimsy evidence that he had found, “Creatures which were supposed to be Jurassic, monsters who would hunt down and devour our largest and fiercest mammals, still exist.” After he was accused of ...more

By Arthur Conan Doyle, dramatised by Chris Harrald. The hot-headed Professor Challenger claims that extinct species of animals are still to be found living on an isolated Amazonian plateau. Dr Summerlee, Lord John Roxton and the intrepid reporter, Edward Malone, find themselves committed to a journey of a lifetime.

This story, written by the author of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, tells of a group of men who brave their way to a remote plateau in Brazil where they find a few dinosaurs, ape men, and local natives. The story is told from the point of view of a journalist, who includes shocking details, hyperbole, and stereotypical people. The core of the story is interesting but the various details do not fit together and do not create a realistic sounding story.
