“This book is a mess!” is the thought that popped into my head on completion of the book!

On the other hand, it does have some good lines. Cather writes best when describing a landscape, a place, a natural phenomenon. She aces when describing the American Southwest. She draws a person’s appearance with finesse too.

Cather always enchants me. Her descriptions of place are so vivd, accurate and tangible that you see in your mind exactly what it looks like. Google any of the places she writes about and you will find that you had the image accurately fixed in your mind. Her characters are real. And the history is intriguing. This was the first Willa Cather that I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed her writing, her descriptions of Lake Michigan, and the New Mexican mesas. Mostly, I love the way she drew her characters. I came away from this book wanting so much more.
