Opening lines:
THE other day, in looking over my papers, I found in my desk the following copy of a letter, sent by me a year since to an old school acquaintance:—
"DEAR CHARLES,
"I think when you and I were at Eton together, we were neither of us what could be called popular characters: you were a sarcastic, observant, shrewd, cold-blooded creature; my own portrait I will not attempt to draw, but I cannot recollect that it was a strikingly attractive one—can you?

This book is a bit too perfect for me. The ending seemed forced and as though Charlotte felt there must be a pretty, happy bow tied on the package. The characters were a bit too dull and nice, and I missed the gothic elements found in her sister's book, Wuthering Heights. The writing is quite good, of course, and I did enjoy the first few chapters which introduced the characters to me. But liked the book less and less as it went on.

Although I didn't enjoy this book as much as Jane Eyre, it wasn't bad. This is definitely a first novel (published after her death). I am glad I read it. I liked that it was set in Brussels.

I usually love classics, and the Brontë sisters are some of my favorite authors, but this book was soooo long and boring that it was hard to read it. Thanks God the pages were only 222 but I really suffered trough them all.
Di solito i classici mi piacciono molto e le sorelle Brontë sono tra le mie autrici preferiti, ma questo libro....ho sofferto ogni singola pagina delle 222, che per fortuna non erano tante, ma la noia mi ha quasi ucciso.
