I'm currently reading this for the world's smallest book club -- just me and a friend who lives in Kentucky together -- and so far it is the most gorgeous prose!

We're supposed to read it through the month of September, so I'm parceling out one chapter a day to make it last.

When I first encountered Rebecca it was two years ago and a bookclub had chosen it for the month. My friends all raved about it--same friends who love Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters. I dreaded reading this book, with fears of misty moors and silly, ridiculous, dreary heroines. If I truly could give this book an honest rating it would be 3.5 stars, rather than 3.

This gets four stars instead of five because I spent the first half of the book annoyed with the heroine. But I liked her for the second half of the book, and I loved du Maurier's writing style. I enjoyed the way the suspense built, and I liked the way the heroine's sense of self was reflected in her attitude toward Manderley. The book was beautifully written! ...more

I have to confess a particular fondness for this type of novel: A romantic intrigue set in the misty vales of an English estate...

Very well written, if not altogether surprising in the big revelation and the denouement. Du Marier builds the suspense flawlessly, and does not indulge in unnecessary exposition, as so many of this genre are wont to do.
