This was one of the most interesting books, I've read all year. In the beginning, I wasn't quite sure who was narrating the story, but class discussions helped to me to realize that it was the little boy in the sailor suit. The distancing view of the narrator, made it look like I was on the outside looking in on the story. I also loved how it was constantly changing stories from chapter to chapter. However, E.L. Ragtime is a pretty good book because it narrates some of the social issues that Americans encountered in the 20s. It uses different characters to present similar themes and then combining them all together in the end to create a great story. Some of the themes presented in the book are racism, American Dream, and individuality. When I first started to read this book, it was a little confusing at first. This book contained many characters’ lives. I loved how the story melted together in the end. So far I find this book really entertaining. I like that Harry Houdini is mentioned because I find him fascinating. Although I’m not finished, I think that this is going to turn into a promising book.
