Possible spoilers follow. ********************** What works is her alignment to an intuitive flow style magic instead of a logical rule bound form. That makes for some good plot points. What works is some but not all of the plot. The basic structure functions but the followthrough gets lost. Character development was weak. I found the relationship with Sartan contrived and forced for a wrapped up happy ending.

I also had trouble with the anthropomorphized forest and the explanation and solution for its negative influence. It just didn't hold together well enough for me.
I only kept reading because a) it was a book club choice and b) I try to give new ( to me) authors a fair chance. I won't be reading Novik again, though.
