I normally love Dean K's books -- and there were elements of this that I enjoyed - but this one wasn't one of my favorites. I loved Gus Gibbs, and his meeting a great aunt via his calves while he was in Australia, but I thought this book tried to be too much. As a result it was neither a great race book, nor a great history book. I enjoyed his scouting for the run to Sparta, more than I enjoyed the Spartathlon I think. If you enjoy adventure, running, and learning about the ancient Greeks, then this is the book for you. Things I loved about this book: quotes from the philosophers, vivid details from the Spartathlon, a thorough history from the world's first marathon. Years ago I read Ultramarathon Man, which I also enjoyed, but I was happy to see that Karnazes has humbled some over time and he comes across as more approachable in this book - like someone you'd want to chat with at the finish line.
