What Members Thought

Prior of this book, my majority pleasure reading materials were science fiction. This is my third book of epic fantasy (Lord of the Rings is the first, Game of Throne is the second). This book made me wants to try epic fantasy genre.
For introducing a complex Malazan universe, this book has vast characters with a lot of intrigue, not-easy-to-understand magic system, and background history that span hundred thousands of years.

This book is an incredible introduction to the series. It is a little confusing at first, but gripping at the same time.

Now that is some good fantasy reading, I loved every moment.

This is the first novel in a now-completed 10-novel epic fantasy by Canadian writer Steven Erikson. It's an impressive enough first novel that I look forward to reading future installments. I wouldn't have to, though: unlike many epic fantasy series, this novel looks like it could stand alone, with all of its major plot threads pretty well wrapped up; there are certainly things for each character and for the world as a whole which could be explored in future volumes, but there's no real cliff-ha

This was my third attempt to read this book. Both of my previous attempts resulted in me saying, "This is horrible, I'm done with it." Why on Earth did I try it again? Good question. It is frequently said that this is the best fantasy series of all time. It is also said, people love it or hate it. It is also said, "If you can get past the first book or two, it becomes fantastic." Based on that and urging from a guy in my D&D group, I thought I'll give it one more try.

Loved the reread. Amazing how much Erikson starts things up with this, but you don't notice when you first read it
