An interesting book for many reasons. This book helped to reconcile the people of Rome with a feeling of roman identity after some very long and miserable civil wars. It was the first truly Roman epic, quite different from what was current mythology of the time. Virgil tried to comment on everything he felt was important about recent history, as well as nodding to Homer and the Greek Tragedies. Having read a few versions of this text, I must say that Robert Fagles' translation of The Aeneid is the best translation I have ever read. Just like his translations of The Illiad and The Odyseey, Fagles is able to capture both the rythm and the depth of Virgil's verses. Not only that, but The Aeneid is a classic tale that should be read by all people as it is, perhaps, the best depiction of the Hero's journey from a small and scared young man to a fearsome and respected warrior.
