What a fun read! I received a free copy of Rita Mae Brown's seminal masterpiece as part of a gift bag at this year's Lambda Literary Awards (I was there because my book was nominated!). I've been meaning to read Rubyfruit for years, but had never gotten around to it, but, boy, am I glad this was literally placed in my hands! I tore through it in about two days.

Loved this book, partly because it was impossible not to love the character of Molly Bolt. She is the ideal heroine for me as far as lesbian/bi lit goes: someone who's focused not so much on labels as being who you are. It's also fasinating to read it now and realize that as far as the LGBTQ movement and as far as the feminist movement has progressed, some of the struggles that Molly faced are still true today.

so, i think this book must have been a real show stopper in the late 70s when it came out, but reading it now, it has sort of a hackneyed theme. and i found it annoying that the protagonist always knew EXACTLY the thing to say to make herself less mainstream and more 'alternative' but RIGHT in every way - it was sort of corny after awhile.
I also think, if you've read "Fingersmith" or "Tipping the Velvet" by sara waters, after reading this book you have to wonder where the HELL these authors are ...more
