I have to admit that I didn't finish this book. I vowed to myself, back when I slogged my way through the insufferable Anna Karenina, that I would never again finish a book just because I had started it -- and I continue to live by that standard. Still, I came very near the end, and my complaint about The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse could not have been repaired in the space left.

What it boils down to is this: for me, Erdrich didn't achieve a genuine internal life for all her

I bought this book at Birchbark Books, the marvelous shop run here in Minneapolis by Louise Erdrich and her sister.

What an amazing read it is too, with a back-and-forthness that slowly builds in its intensity. The people and places became familiar to me despite my not having read earlier novels touching on many of the same subjects (starting with 1984's Love Medicine).

SO AMAZING!! This is my new favorite, really well written and keeps you intrigued the whole way through. Kind of like a mystery novel, with gender variance and the meeting of Ojibwe traditions/culture with critiques of christianity and domination. Totally fell in love with the characters.
