This "graphic memoir" by Alison Bechdel is short, dark, funny, and remarkably moving. I'm not a particular fan of graphic novels, or of dysfunctional family memoirs, but this book is completely awesome. ...more

Fucking love this book. I have been reading Allison Bechdel's comics "Dykes to Watch out for" for years. This graphic novel memoir is a completely different undertaking. Bechdel details her childhood, coming out to her parent's, her father's suicide, and her discovery of his internalized homophobia. It is beautifully drawn and so moving. I met her at a book signing and almost died I am so fucking in love with this woman. She is not only intelligent, quirky, and neurotic...she is HOT AS WELL. ...more

This book is probably the best graphic novel I've ever read. It's one of those books that I'm happy I invested in because I know I'll be going back to it time and time again. This is ultimately the story of finding the humanity and the flaws in your parents and learning to live eye to eye with all of those things. It's funny, fascinating, darkly funny in the best was that episodes of Six Feet Under could be (also one of my favorite shows). Wonderful. I recommend this to one and all. ...more

never thought i'd be able to read a graphic novel, much less rate one at five stars, but this was elegant, articulate, insightful, well-narrated, and funny. the parallels bechdel draws are thought-provoking, and i love how she tells the story. she lays out the basic story in the first chapter or two then spirals around, adding more layers of detail and connections in every chapter. ...more

Her "Dykes to Watch Out For" comics are ok, but this book is amazingly good, and for any reader, dyke or otherwise. Her own lesbionic coming of age as she also tries to deal with the death/possible suicide of her father and the realization that he'd been having gay affairs her entire life. PLUS her growth as an artist etc etc. Good stuff and worth the time! ...more
