Masterful prose. Butler has so much to teach about creating characters.

But this is a hard book to recommend. I felt worn out by this book. I had nightmares. I wanted to read it constantly, but I felt sad and fearful the whole time I had it in my hands.

That said, I plan on reading the sequel after I read Kindred.

I had to re-read this to be able to make the most of the Octavia's Parables podcast that adrienne maree brown and Toshi Reagon are creating and sharing with us right now. They cover a chapter of the book per week - and are planning to discuss both of the completed parables and some about Parable of the Trickster, the never finished 3rd novel in this trilogy. WHAT A GIFT to go back and re-read this now with a completely different sense of self and understanding of the world around me. ...more

I'm a sucker for feminist dystopian literature, especially when Octavia Butler does it. This feels a little slow till you realize that as the first of a trilogy a lengthy preamble is appropriate. Got the Parable of the Talents on hold already. What's this hyper-empathetic Black Woman messiah gonna DO NEXT?? Tune in next time.... ...more

I am glad I am finally making time to read this classic. I had read Dawn in college and have been meaning to read more Octavia Butler. It feels a little too close to 2024 for comfort at the moment so the book is giving me anxiety. ...more

I love this book, I love Butler! This book was felt prophetic durning W's time in office, now it just feels like we are waiting for it. With 45's cuts on science and environmental protections, with this new rising of racism (meaning more overt) and the breaking down of the working and middle classes...

I love Octavia Butler’s stuff, such a unique voice. The two books in this series are the closest depiction of what I think the future will be like.

Really a 3.5, as I enjoyed it a great deal, but not enough for a full 4.
