I love Octavia Butler’s stuff, such a unique voice. The two books in this series are the closest depiction of what I think the future will be like.

A classic! So many deep lessons here. I read all of Octavia Butler’s work many years ago when she was still alive, but this is the one I was never able to finish. I discovered Octavia Butler first with Kindred, which I loved. Next I read this book (I didn't realize it was the second of two) and it was another enjoyable book. Her writing and character based story-telling makes me love her even though I wouldn't describe myself as a science fiction reader.

Reread July 2019. I forgot how much I love this book. How devastating and heartbreaking it is but yet full of hope and resilience and strength. It makes me think that no matter how awful things can be it gets better. I love Butler, I miss her but am so thankful that her voice will never go silent.
