Norah Vincent writes about some intriguing gender dynamics after she dresses as a man in various environments for a year and a half. However, the book's biggest failing comes from her hyperempathy with men. It's OK if the guys in her bowling league tell racist, homophobic, and sexist jokes because they make fun of everyone equally. Really? And the monastery where she spent a few weeks was simply too rarefied an environment for examining all-male space.

She infiltrates a bowling league. Its a good voyeuristic read, but hardly wickedly insightful. More like, "could I pull that off"?

Wasn't bad but maybe could've been better- I don't know. I found parts interesting & some of it seemed to drag- 2 thumbs up to Norah Vincent tho - took balls to do what she did.

Imagine living a year and a half as another gender. These slices of life are instructive for every male in our culture interested in understanding why men do the things they do and the social pressures brought to bear to enforce conformity. Couple this book with more scholarly work like "Stiffed: The Betrayal of the American Man" by Susan Faludi, and you'll get a feel for the contradictions men are expected to live with in our society.

Hated this book with a passion bordering on zealous. Poorly written, disjointed, and without any of the introspection necessary for a memoir. I could go on, but I won't. This book nearly put me off the NYTimes Book Review as they recommended it. Seriously, save your time and read ANY other book by a dyke about gender. This one sucked.

I wanted to love this, but at the end of the day, Vincent's characterization of men was so unbelievable -- I read passages about how men acted towards each other aloud to my husband, who found them a trite over-simplification. It reveals more of Vincent's misandry than any profound truths about sex and gender.
