Picano's account of his time involved in gay small-press publishing, first with his own SeaHorse press, and then with the addition of the collaborative Gay Presses of New York. One of the first things by Dennis Cooper that I read was Safe, which was published by GPNY. There are quite a few books mentioned in here that I should add to my to-read list. The accounts of dealing with stores and distributors reminded me of my time as a zine publisher.

Invaluable as a historical document, but also an accessible introduction to a number of pioneering queer writers and artists (I have a long list of titles I'd like to get ahold of now) and an intriguing "behind the scenes" look at how small presses operate.
