good thing this wasn't the first Chabon book I read or have never have picked up the others. Forced quirkiness, too much philosophizing about what it means to be a writer and the whole section about visiting the in-laws should have been cut.

I don't like "books like this"---where the characters are all in failing marriages and everyone is a failure and miserable all the time and an invisible high school English teacher is breathing down your neck and chiding you for not understanding the book at all, you philistine.
But I really enjoyed reading this book, I finished it in a matter of days, and I guess the only thing left to attribute it to is Michael Chabon and his style.

Teachers are for learning people and stuff, but they have problems too. Even with problems they can still instruct. Like you have to break it up into little tiny pieces if you're going to do it right.
