This book is a small gem. In fewer than 200 pages, Andrew Sean Greer weaves the story of a marriage in crisis with delicacy, finesse and the prose of an angel. I loved his evocation of San Francisco's Sunset district in the 1950's. But even more than that I loved his ability to capture the mystery at the heart of the book's central relationship. I read it in just two sittings, and was sad when I had finished it.

Beautifully written, certainly, if now and then a little over the top, and with many insights into the nature of love and relationships. But told in such a distant and elegiac tone as to be virtually bloodless.
Holland, the husband, in particular, remains an emotional cypher, but even Pearlie, from whose viewpoint the story is told, seems to be wrapped in cotton and, as much as her husband, more acted upon than acting.

I think I preferred The Confessions of Max Tivoli to this one, but Greer delivers the same heartbreakingly beautiful prose that I loved in Tivoli.
