Almost a month after finishing this novel I'm still thinking about it. The depiction of a group of late 18th Century aristocrats in England is incredibly well done. I loved the way that the unstable politics of the time wove their way through the story line and subtly commented on our own politics. This is only a four star book because it is incredibly long and starts out slow. It was almost halfway through the book before I felt the pace pick up. I skipped 250 pages in the middle of this book and was still able to discuss it with my book group. It's lovely, deeply nuanced historical fiction, but there were WAY too many names for me to keep track of. ...more
