A bittersweet, lush snippet of a book. Its petite 182 pages are overflowing with some of my favorite things -- secret and mysterious gardens, strong-minded female characters, vivid descriptions of the English countryside. It also aches with suicidal despair, repressed sexuality, unrequited love, and the desolation & waste of war. As much as I enjoyed the texture and richness of this book, I was left wishing that the protagonist and her loves could have found their way into the sunlit garden toge
