This is a very beautifully structured novel by Isherwood. And not is it only an important "Gay" novel, but it is also a great Los Angeles book as well. The quiet desperation of a British collage professor's long-term lost of a love to a car accident. The story is one day in the life of a man in grief coping with his lost- yet it is very quiet, but with a side dish of great observations on life in a Los Angeles neighborhood circ. early 1960's with the fear of Cuba and the bomb, etc.

I loved the writing of this book. It is not a long read, but the book is packed with notes, thoughts, and feelings about life, aging, relationships, and the pain of unexpected loss. I love the movie and really enjoyed reading the book after the movie.
Excellent book. Would be interesting to re-read it in the context of the documentary Chris & Don: A Love Story, which talks about Isherwood and Bachardy's lives and Don's life after Chris' death. Though this book is not autobiographical, it's based on Isherwood's speculations on life conditions for a surving partner.

The book was good, but the movie was amazing! I usually enjoy the novels more than the films, but this is the exception by far.
