I read this book first a couple of years after it won the PEN and Lambda Lit Award. I reread it for, well, an assignment. As picky as I am with postcolonial novels (if this book could count as one), there are overarching themes that sometimes are discussed rigorously, sometimes tendentious. I devoured this book while we were on vacation in Mexico - one day in a lounge chair on the beach was all it took to read the whole luscious book. The language, the characters, and the story are enchanting and dreamy and it was a fictional account that read like a memoir which delighted me. A beautifully written book - I highly recommend it. Especially if you have 8 hours on a beach.
