This is a beautiful book--its lovely muted tones occasionally broken by blue (and a few other colors here and there.) A love story framed by grief and mourning and an intimacy that can develop even after (or perhaps because of?) loss.

Maybe some spoilers here, so, if you are concerned, read no further.

When I first finished the book I was mostly relieved that it was so much more compelling than the film. But as I consider it and look at it more closely and read other people's reviews, I begin to

Edit, updated review on the movie and not the book at all, dude wtf: I watched the movie. In case you are wondering how long a movie based on a graphic novel that is 100% about a lesbian relationship, takes to get to the lesbian relationship part, (and chooses to instead spend its time showing hella lame hetero sex), the answer is 45 minutes. And then an additional 30 mins from there for the actual lesbian sexing. (The total time of the movie is approaching 3 hours by the way- so I guess they fe ...more

I gotta confess that this hit me emotionally. Not big ridiculous tears, but I cared about these characters. That's always a happy thing for me, and I find it to be kind of rare in the comic book/graphic novel format. I don't know why that is.

Perhaps the visuals provide a clue, though. Those faces, so expressive. Those humans, so beautiful, both male and female.

I don't want to say too much. Plenty of others have most likely given plot synopses (something I won't do in a review anyway, because ho

I liked this except the beginning and the end. (view spoiler) (That's not really a spoiler, you find out in the first 5 pages of the novel, but I'm hiding it anyway because it's a bit less clear in the movie.) Too bad, since the art is so lovely and I did like the characters. When a big chunk of the plot is a tired homophobic trope, though, and played for maximum melodrama....

Sam and I tried the movie afterwards, and NOPE. Read the book, for what it'

I originally heard about Blue is the Warmest Color because of the controversy surrounding the movie. Apparently, the male director completely missed the point and he created a movie that existed to show the straight male idea of what lesbian sex looked like, and it really pissed off the author of the book.

I completely forgot about all of it until the graphic novel was in my hands at the library. The artwork is absolutely beautiful. It is moody and monochromatic. It tells a somewhat typical stor

Blue is the Warmest Color is a beautiful book about first love, coming of age and a teenage girl discovering and accepting her sexuality. The art is gorgeous.

I got this because I saw the movie and found it wanting -- some major gaps in the story that didn't fit and such. And someone said it was a lot different than the book so thought I'd try the book. It was much better than the movie. It explained a lot of things that didn't make sense in the movie (timeline, etc.). The story as a whole held together better.

The story is a teenage girl coming to terms with her sexuality in a somewhat bumpy manner. I like the artwork too and the use of color (Thomas

This graphic novel is beautifully illustrated. The story is very well told and is about a teenager coming out in Paris in the 90s when she meets a girl that she is magnetically attracted to. Her story brought back a lot of my own memories of coming out, both the anxieties and the liberation.

Beeeautiful book. I watched the movie first (which I've never done), and I liked the movie better (which I've never thought). Though I very much wanted to love this book, I just liked it. The movie filled in a lot of gaps in storyline and its ending was a lot more forlorn and therefore a lot better. ...more
