This was another one I've moved from les-romance to les-fiction. It has a romance but isn't a romance novel per se (at least to me). It's loosely based on real women that the author couldn't find much about, so she consulted a oiuja board. Whether she actually talked to the women, I don't know. But the result was a nice story of two lesbians trying to create a life in 1816-1817, a time when society didn't have much use for independent women, much less lesbian independent women.

While this book had some content in it I definitely raised my eyebrows at (some weird slave bits??) it was above all interesting to read a lesbian romance written in the 60s. I definitely had zero idea what was happening when either character narrated the sex they were having, but I accepted it because none of it wigged me out. It was actually pretty refreshing to have lesbianism itself be the "niche" fetish of the book, rather than the weird shit you find in lesbian romance novels these days (w
