This is honestly my platonic ideal of comfort reading. The mystery is tricky enough to not be predictable, but also not so obscure that the plot twists were frustrating. The main characters were fun and witty with snappy dialogue. I liked the exploration of Haden syndrome and the meaning of disability and virtual communities. I should read more Scalzi

This mystery, science fiction novel is about a brand new FBI agent who has Haden’s syndrome; people with this are fully awake and aware, but cannot respond. Shane can function with the use of a robot. Other people use the very few Integrators, who let those who are locked in borrow their bodies for a set time. I dig this book and look forward to rereading it, quite possibly with the students in my Reading/Writing SF class. The novel is science fiction, but has a police procedural plot, so it can be a quick read if you're only looking for the whodunnit and the evidence. I'm guessing, though, that it would also make for lively discussion not just about craft--world-building, the difference between scientific detail and technobabble--but also around the more subtle questions it raises about disability, g ...more

I don't love the genre of buddy-cop sci-fi -- I get it, having a "new partner" allows characters to explain the state of the world to the reader without it seeming like a contrived infodump -- but this was pretty good.

It edges toward cyberpunk in a few places but never quite gets there. Nonetheless, it was a great read!
