Michael Tolliver Lives is the rare book that I finished in one day. I think it's partly because I took a break from the series after Sure of You, and was so happy to be back among friends.
Unlike the previous six, this one is in the first person, and pretty much restricted to Michael's romance with the much younger Ben. The most graphic of the Tales books, Maupin fearlessly depicts the sex lives of older gay men here. I could see how some people would be squeamish reading about an intergeneration ...more

Others have written better reviews of this book. I'd just like to say that I put off reading it for quite some time because I didn't like the idea of the 20 something irrepressible Michael "Mouse" Toliver growing older.
Well he has and so have I and it's NOT the tragedy that we both thought it would be. ...more

I love Michael Tolliver. He and Anna Madrigal are the reasons to read the series in the first place. All of the characters are older, some wiser, and always entertaining. Told in the first person, Michael reflects on his survival of the AIDS epidemic, his loves and losses over the years, his life with his new younger husband, and his sexual encounters. Brian, Anna, Seana, and MaryAnn round out the stories.

Michael, called Mouse in the Tales of the City books is 55, still has HIV, has a heart condition, and a thickening waist, takes Viagra and various other medications.
He’s also got a boyfriend, Ben, a whole adult younger than him! This is different from the TOTC books in that this is first person Michael. We only hear about other characters through his POV, but that was plenty for me.
Michael no longer has the adventures he once did, but he loves Ben and is devoted to Brian his friend and colleag ...more

Oh my God. Where to begin with this completely unecessary book. The smiling pic of Maupin on the jacket says it all. This is not the Michael Tolliver I saw in my head. This is Armi-all the way bragging about how an older, not that fat (yeah, right, fatty!) gentleman of the gay persuasion can still have hot kinky sex with a committed younger guy as long as the relationship is one of those open ones that don't work in the long run, except this one does. Whatever....

Like physical old friends, the characters from Maupin's novels are sweet and comforting. They have been where we have been and are headed where we are headed. As we do with ourselves, we ignore their flaws in the flesh and on the printed page. And even though we recognize their every fault, we welcome them in as a printed reminder of lives perhaps not so well spent, but decidedly well lived.

Sooo nice to go back to the characters of Tales of the City novels after so many years to find out what happened to them later in life. Definately worth the read for those who discovered "Mouse" and the gang ions ago....Mr. Maupin doesn't disappoint!

This book was just ok. A fast, light read as is usual with Maupin. But honestly, it just wasn't up to par if you consider the previous books in the series this book was based upon.
His choice of a "twist" character seemed a bit silly.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed getting to see what's happened to all my old Barbary Lane friends. ...more
