What's interesting about this book is that it's a young adult retelling of the Cinderella story with a few twists. This book takes place in a similar setting to the classic Cinderella story - a monarchic Eurpoean setting focused around wealthy society. Ash serves her unkind stepmother and stepsisters and sometimes prefers to sleep near the hearth in the ash and cinders. This is also a time when society, especially in urban centers and royal circles, is transitioning away from traditional beliefs

I must say I was unfortunately a little underwhelmed by this book. The story is well written enough, but I felt as though the characters lacked a little depth, which made it difficult for me to connect with any of them, except maybe Clara, the younger septsister, who was actually one of the most interesting characters for me. As for the protagonist, Ash, I found myself indifferent to her fate. Maybe there were too many elements that would have better served the story if they were developed furth

I like the book. I finished it in one read as young adult fiction is a bit like brain candy. But I can't say it wooed me. Maybe my thoughts will change after book club.

I did not enjoy this book as much as I would have liked going into it. To me, there was too much time spent in the Wood and with the Fairies and not enough time spent with the Huntress. Perhaps the sequel focuses more on the relationship between Ash and the Huntress. But I would have preferred more in this book. However, I did appreciate turning the traditional fairy tale on its head by having the protagonist interested in the huntress and not the prince.

It was ok. This is a young adult book and it felt much more YA in terms of writing than most of the ones I've read in the last few years. I was intrigued by a lesbian Cinderella story but it felt like several separate stories (huntress vs. fairy vs. Cinderella) that seemed to barely touch at times. It was more like 3 short stories that were never fully developed on their own that were mingled to form a novel. It wasn't bad though, just unsatisfying.

Really enjoyed this fractured fairytale of Cinderella with the twists of real fairies , Ash not dreaming of the prince and a lesbian love.
