I'm conflicted about this one. I can say it was good enough to motivate me to pick the second book. But by itself?
It's too much black & white, without having enough interesting hooks in the writing to make it distinguish itself from others. There are very nice bits here and there, but the climax is underwhelming, even if the last chapters have good page turners.

I'm very much on the fence about this one.
I loved the writing style, and especially Hobb's ability to tell, what is at it's core, a fairly typical fantasy story in an absolutely unique way. I disliked the fairly slow pace and lack of overall substance to the actual story.
Initially I was loving the book, just basking in the lovely storytelling, without too much concern for where it was all going. In this respect it reminded me a lot of more recent books like The Goblin Emperor and Station Eleven ...more
