I love what KSR sets out to do here, telling the human story of the first 50 years or so of mankind's colonisation of Mars. I was completely enthralled with this book through the first half or so, as different factions and personalities clash regarding the best way's to make Mars habitable for human life, with huge corporations and governments back on earth looming in the background, to distant to exert their full pressures.

A long overdue re-read. Simply a masterwork of hard near future sci-fi. So much descriptive detail in every aspect - the Martian geography and geology especially. I am not 100% sure everything holds up based on things we have learned in the past quarter century, but nothing seems too far off. Except the dates, which seemed very distant in the mid-1990s but don't seem to be far away at all (the beginning of the book takes place just 9 years from now).
