This is a great book. Well, 90% of a great book. I wish I could give it 4.5 stars, the ending was not up to the previous 90% but I will bow to the genius of the 90% and suffer that Eco, in my admittedly limited experience, really does not know how to write an ending. On reflection, a lot of great authors don't. I suppose when you create such an interesting place with such interesting characters it is hard to wind things up and leave that place and those people.

Often described as an intellectual adventure, this one didn't resonate with me as a coherent story. Then again, I don't know that it's trying to.
A winding, sometimes rambling discourse on the futility of constantly searching for the unknowable while failing to recognize true moments of grace, I often felt like Eco wanted me to pay a similar mental penance as the characters to truly understand the perils of such thought. Secret societies, Templars, mysteries and myths and holographic universe theory, all wrapped up in one brilliant portable tome of genius. It's isn't an easy read; even I find myself referring to the OED or calling a friend in Italy to ask if a word might have been mistranslated, but one of the joys of reading Eco, is the challenge of sucking the marrow from the bones of his masterpieces to get every last drop of genius from the pages.
