I couldn't quite put my finger on why this book felt flat, until I realized that it was a novelization of a television broadcast. Upon that discover, much of what I found disconcerting became clear. It really does read like a teleplay or a screenplay adaptation. It didn't have nearly the depth that I normally associate with Gaiman's characters or environments.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this book a lot. I just feel that it's doesn't measure up to Gaiman's other work. The characters are enjoyable and well-written, but the mythical world here, London Below, doesn't have the cohesive mythology present Anansi Boys or American Gods.
