Wonderful, wonderful book. A fantasy story that isn't about swords, is only marginally about sorcery, and talks about the immigrant experience in 1890s New York soulfully.

Incredibly strong book, where the feeling of late 19th century emigrant New Yorkers really comes to the forefront. The titular characters have their fantasy traits that give them a bit of colour, but where they really shine is in their psychological portrayal, superbly done by the author. For me this is one of those books which came so heavily recommended it was almost doomed to failure yet somehow it managed to live up to most of the hype.
This is a distinctly different, and highly enjoyable take on the fantasy genre, really exploring the idea of mythical creatures living among us and using that to explore the idea of free will and our self identity.
