I mostly enjoyed this dark, adult fairy tale, the story of Agnieszka, a girl who is unluckily conscripted to assist the local wizard in combating the evil presence of the nearby woods. The characters were generally interesting and surprising, and the world was a fresh take on a fantasy setting, drawing on eastern European influences. Some elements of the book were frustrating: there seemed to be no reason why the wizard wouldn't explain his plans to Agnieszka other than for her to have a mystery

Really enjoyed this one. Takes your everyday "girl must be given to the dragon" fairy tale in a slightly different direction, mixes in a bit of wizard school and court intrigue, and lets the protagonist solve things her own way in the end.
