I liked this quite a bit up until the last 10-15%. Then it all fell apart for me, not exactly sure why. I think part of it is the descriptions of war and combat were not very good, kind of a mishmashy mess. The author is better at smaller scale interactions than larger scenes. Also, characters started acting outside their carefully built-up stereotypes toward the end of the book for reasons that seemed more to do with the book's plot than with how they had been portrayed to that point, which was

A very good book. It's pretty hardcode, but not in the usual "sex and violence" way, but a more "grey people doing very bad things because it's necessary for their larger goals even though it hurts them" kind of way. The characters are well-drawn enough for us to feel their turmoil in doing what is Bad But Necessary. I can't say I enjoyed it as such, but I think it's well done.

The setup was mildly interesting but it falls apart fast for me, mainly due to the poorly written characters and their nonsensical actions. Also, mind numbingly boring. I have no desire to read a fantasy novel where the main character is auditing accounting records and performing intrigues based on getting accurate inventories and interviews with bank executives.
