For research, believe it or not. Do not ask how, as a historian of colonial North America, I can justify doing a major project on the colonization of Mars. In all likelihood my advisor would think I was a retard if he found out.

Have to respect Zubrin's imaginativeness and practicality. His historical analogy of Mars with the American West is both breathtakingly naive and extraordinarily compelling. Your mileage may vary.

I enjoyed this book. Using existing technology, he outlines how we can get to Mars and establish a colony. The guy knows his stuff too. I believe he was one of the main guys that spear-headed the whole Mars direct plan to NASA.
