Charlie LeDuff wrote an entertaining book. Did I believe all of it? No. Did he seem to insert himself unnecessarily into the narrative? You betcha. If you're going to write about a city like Detroit, it is pretty hard to be boring. In my very humble opinion, Detroit's social, racial and economic history is pretty fascinating, and I had no doubt that LeDuff could handle that part well.
