Despite the violence and death that appear in the story, the gentle style prevents anything from becoming too fast paced. Similar to The Stand in many ways - flashbacks and multiple viewpoints, two opposing forces, lots of traveling after an epic epidemic - this is less graphic and more thoughtful. And shorter.
