I gotta say, I was a little disappointed in this one. While I really enjoyed it, it almost seemed like a book from a different series than the previous two. So while I liked it, I also had issues with it. Does that make sense?

Okay, let's recap - The Cruel Prince and The Wicked King were these books full of intrigue, and gasps, and betrayals, and me biting my nails because I never knew what was coming and was surprised by everything. Black held nothing back in those two books and I lo 3.5ish Stars

Okay, let's recap - The Cruel Prince and The Wicked King were these books full of intrigue, and gasps, and betrayals, and me biting my nails because I never knew what was coming and was surprised by everything. Black held nothing back in those two books and I loved her willingness to go there with her characters. But here? The surprises were more of a "she did what?" and it seemed like Black held a lot back.

There will be possible spoilers ahead!

So first things, the length. This book was super short for what it needed to be. I felt that all the story lines were wrapped up fairly quickly without any sort of backlash or really any dire circumstances. It was like conflict meet resolution really fast. Where was all the scheming we came to know from these characters? Their inner conflicts? Their rage? Everything was just gone. And while I liked the overall story, there was little substance to really get lost in it.

Then we have the characters. Don't get me wrong, I loved me some Jude and Cardan love story. But even I will admit, a lot of their actions seemed out of character for them. They became these two people who just pined for each other constantly when that's not who they ever were. But I will admit, Cardan's way around Jude's banishment made me giggle.

Also, really? The snake on the cover wasn't that horrible sister Taryn? I am so upset that literally nothing happened to Taryn here. She apologizes and all is forgiven. Excuse me? She literally backstabbed you and caused you so much pain and loss and all is forgiven with an 'I'm sorry'. No, I just don't buy it. If Black needed Jude back in fairie, there were other ways to do it. No way did Taryn deserve to get off scott free.

So there were parts I really enjoyed and overall I liked it. I just feel like the ending didn't really live up to the story that had been presented to us. It was too neat. Too shiny. But alas, this will still be one of my favorite series even if the final book didn't live up to it's predecessors. ...more

3rd read and I love every second of it. Something that I haven't talked about before is how much I love the supporting cast in this trilogy! Not Taryn and Locke, because gross, but so many of the other characters are wonderful! I think it's amazing that they are so unique and feel so fleshed out even though this story focuses so heavily on Jude and Cardan that others don't really get much page time. Some of my favorites: Grima Mog, Nicasia, Madoc, The Bomb, The Roach.

I loved this book but also wish it was longer. I’m sad the series is over but I’m happy with the way it ended. Along the way Holly Black made sure to rip my heart out a few times and make me panic, that’s for sure. All the more reason I loved the book and the series.

Jude is my favorite character by far, which is not to say there aren’t a ton of great well developed characters in this series, because there are. I’m also pretty attached to Madoc in all his complexity (view spoiler) I loved this book but also wish it was longer. I’m sad the series is over but I’m happy with the way it ended. Along the way Holly Black made sure to rip my heart out a few times and make me panic, that’s for sure. All the more reason I loved the book and the series.

Jude is my favorite character by far, which is not to say there aren’t a ton of great well developed characters in this series, because there are. I’m also pretty attached to Madoc in all his complexity (view spoiler). I love almost all of them for the good and the bad, and especially the morally gray. But Jude, she’s just so strong and unrelenting. I’ve loved watching her go through so much to figure out who she is and be confident in that. I’m going to miss her character so much.

Plot-wise the book kept my interest the whole time and I ended up really liking how all this went and all the twists and turns the characters faced. I would love more from this world or stories about the side characters along the way or just SOMETHING. Can you tell I’m not ready to be done?

The only two parts that were slightly lacking for me were (view spoiler) and (view spoiler).

So now I guess I just wait until I miss these characters and start my reread... ...more

I enjoyed this book. I think it was a fitting ending to the overall story of the series. I liked the way it ended. However, I do have some issues with the book. For one, it once again was a little predictable. I knew how things were going to turn out as soon as certain pieces of information were revealed. Also there wasn't as much between Jude and Cardan as the internet made me believe. Since there wasn't a lot in the previous book, I was expecting this book to have a lot more scenes that showed ...more
