4 1/2 stars. Pretty freakin awesome. I loved how truly gothic and creepy this book was. I loved the main character, she was strong willed and vibrant. Her character absolutely made this story work, without her in it, it just wouldn't have worked as well. All the character's where very well developed and the haunted house setting was interesting and unique. The house had a grip on the inhabitants and I liked the back story explaining why that all was.

"After all, nothing in this place was what it seemed. There were secrets upon secrets."
This is a wonderfully creepy gothic story. It's hard to know what's going on and it's definitely a slow story. It isn't until about half way that the story really starts to get traction. But once it gets rolling, it's much easier to just get through the story than stop. There are definitely some gross parts but the horror story makes them worth it! I'm so glad I gave this one a try! Such a fun horror story! ...more

what a lush, evocative read this was. it started off slowly, introducing us to everyone, and gave us a bit of a chance to know them. Then we got a bit of background, some points of interest, some creepiness, and Ba-BAM!! A rollicking last few chapters of excitement!.
I went through a range of being irked by Noemi's flightiness, to being impressed by her caring about her cousin, to pleasure and enjoyment of her fortitude in the face of danger .

I think my expectations for this one sunk my actual ability to enjoy it. It was EVERYWHERE, so I figured it must be pretty spectacular, and plus, I love a good horror book. But its actually more gothic (I know, the name should have been a clue) than horror (despite the MPG) and I found it more ewww than scary. And it was kind of boring. That'll teach me to read GR choice award winners.

I have to admit I was so looking forward to reading this book but was let down by the majority of the story. It wasn't a long book thankfully because if it had kept going on I probably would have given it 2 stars. All the stuff that happened at the end is what actually saved this book from 2 stars or less.
I pushed myself to finish the book but it was truly a struggle for me. ...more
