This book was WILD. It started off at a very slow pace where we were just meeting these characters and getting to know the world. Then BAM. It just suddenly hits and there was no stopping. Very reminiscent of The Hunger Games where families sacrifice their children to win a game - in this case it's control of all the high magic left. The winning family will then control that magic for 20 years until the next tournament begins. It's brutal. Unlike The Hunger Games, the kids of these fami ...more

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this book. This book was definitely a wild ride.
First off, I really loved the premise for this book. When I read the synopsis I knew that I had to read this book. I think that it is the execution of the ideas that I am not the biggest fan of. I think that perhaps the combined writing style of these two authors is just not to my liking. I didn't find it as relatable as I generally like in a story. That's not to say that I didn't entirely like the boo ...more

Thank you to Netgalley, Tor, and Macmillan Audio for an arc of this book!
Every 20 years, the blood moon rises and seven families put forth a champion to compete in a tournament. The prize for winning? Exclusive access to High Magic, the most powerful kind. Losing? Death.
This book was delightfully dark! I loved that there are 4 different character pov's. Sometimes multiple pov's can kind of confuse a story and lessen the character building, but I think it went really well for this one, ...more

Like many people, the idea of this book - The Hunger Games with magic - REALLY excited me. Especially as it was also advertised as having strong LGBT representation.
First of all I found the setting/time of the book quite confusing. It seemed like a magical medieval type setting but then would mention cars and school lockers other modern things. I know there's magic but it just seemed strange that the champions wouldn't use any kind of modern tools and techniques in the tournament. It was just a ...more

This was a solid 4-star read, read 300 pages in one sitting. I really enjoyed the narrator of the audiobook as well. I liked the different cast of characters, but it was missing something. It was slightly giving me Hunger Games vibes which I liked, but really nothing stands up to that in my mind when it comes to tournaments/trials/challenges. I need to read this sequel to see whether it's a good duology overall
