Would just like to update this now that it's been six months and express that I still FUCKING HATE this ending! No thank you sir.

I haven't decided on an overall rating because I fucking HATE the ending so much. The very last chapter is fucking stupid. Negative stars from me. NEGATIVE. To be clear I mean the last labeled chapter, not the epilogue. The epilogue was fine and I better get answers on how that plotline proceeds in the next book.

I honestly don't even know what to say about that ending. I still cannot wrap my mind around it. So while I try to ponder what that ending means for us, I'm just going to prattle on about other aspects of this book.

Let's start off by saying this book was a monster. At over 800 pages, you just hope that there's enough substance and that the pacing is right to make this book work. As I said in my review of the first one, the pacing was majorly off for me and it ruined my enjoyment. Maas did seem to get better here. It wasn't perfect, but she did cram an awful lot of shit into this book. But what I did really like was that we finally got answers - answers to how the Asteri came to rule this world and why the world is the way that it is. And let me tell you, it was not what I was expecting.

Now this book opened up with a prologue that followed a brand new set of characters. I, like most that I've talked to, was on the side of "we do not need more characters". I was once again confused as to what was going on and wanted to know where my core group was. How was the group faring after the end of the last book? What sort of consequences are they going to face? I did not care about this new person named Sofie - and truthfully, that never really changed.

But we did get other new characters mainly Cormac - another fae prince looking for Bryce's hand in marriage. This guy was a pompous as they come but yet, he was intriguing and brought some new life into this comfortable group. We also got to know more about Ithan and this little wolf just broke my heart. The loss of his brother is something that he still hasn't recovered from and I don't think he ever will. He falls into this group unwillingly, but once he does, it just clicks. This is really, at the core, a group of people who want to belong somewhere.

I loved the action and mysteries that were spread throughout this novel. I kept trying to figure everything out so I could be one step ahead of the reveals, but alas, I was not that smart lol. Maas outwitted me at every turn and I may have gasped more than I wanted to. But nothing hit quite like the last line of the book.

WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE?????

I still don't know if I liked what was revealed. I definitely think it changes EVERYTHING across multiple books and I just can't fathom how everything is going to go down. (view spoiler). I know that this is an ending people are going to be talking about for awhile and I, like them, will be spouting off theories until we have the next installment in our hands. Whether you liked it or not, it definitely shook everyone.

Also, can Maas just stop using the word "mate"? In every single book, it's overused and I cringe every time I read it. Just stop. ...more

I am at an unfathomable loss for words right now. I feel like I am in a drug-induced stupor but the only drug I'm on is fantastic fiction. I am absolutely speechless right now.

If there is one thing to take away from this book it is that Sarah J. Maas knows how to plot out worlds. Like, boy does she ever. Anyone that has read all of her books before reading this one will agree and if they don't then they are lying to themselves and everyone else, to be honest. The plot of this story will have you a-d-d-i-c-t-e-d! The world-building is massive and connects to some of her other works in surprising ways. It's kind of mind-blowing. The world that Maas has created is clever and original. There really is nothing like it. I've always enjoyed Maas's writing style. I like that she lets her characters tell the story and doesn't bother sticking to one or two POVs.

I know I said that the plot was addicting but the characters are equally as addicting. These characters are relatable and memorable. These characters will work themselves under your skin and wedge themselves in your bones. They will become your next favorite fandom. I love the relationships between all the different characters. Even more than that, I love that each character in this series is distinct and stands out to the reader. There are so many characters that have excellent character growth throughout the story. The character development isn't rushed and it feels organic. I also love the HUGE ensemble cast of characters and how each and every one of them finds their way into my heart.

I loved the romance in the book. You are going to be shipping everyone, okay? Maas writes really great relationships, regardless of romance, so when characters come together romantically it is always so satisfying. I love the banter between characters and the way that Maas really makes you feel the love and genuine affection between characters.

Overall, this is a book that delivers in every single way. The plot is out of this world and crafted with genius, the characters soar off the page with originality and you won't be able to get them out of your head, and the world-building is so creative and complex that it will stun you. This series is worth all the hype and it's no wonder that it has such a high star rating. I am going to be nursing the most intense book hangover until the third book releases. Wish me luck!

Like the first book in the series, House of Sky and Breath has a few little pacing issues. When I first read House of Earth and Blood I thought it was super slow and boring to get into. Although since then I have re-read it and appreciated all that world building so much more. After that I was fully expecting to come into House of Sky and Breath with a fast pace now that all the world building was done. And it did… but then somewhere in the middle the pacing slowed down for quite a few chapters and honestly, I struggled a little with the middle. This has by no means affected my enjoyment of the book overall, but I did feel like there was some difference in pacing.

I was not expecting the amount of twists and turns that I found in this book. I thought we’d already worked through the Danika mystery in the first book but boy was I wrong. Danika’s secrets and mysteries are expanded on tenfold in this book and there were many times I was left gobsmacked, jaw agape, unable to believe what was happening. I absolutely love it when there’s a book that makes me feel like this. I tend to guess twists and turns in books a lot, so the fact that this one left me reeling is incredible.

I truly loved every moment of this book. Sarah’s writing has come so far since her debut and it has been an absolute pleasure to experience that journey in real time with her. She is one of my all time favourite authors and she has, once again, left me reeling, dying to get my hands on the next book. Some people have been ranting and raving about the ending, particularly how bad it is. And yes, I guess it is a pretty bad cliffhanger. But as someone who loves a cliffhanger, and doesn’t mind a long wait in between books, I loved the ending. It was epic and exciting and it’s just made me super excited for the next book. If you haven’t read this series yet, I highly recommend that you do. It has everything you could possibly want in a good romantasy! It’s a must-read.
