Update 9/7/23
This was a reread of the second book in An Ember in the Ashes series and I loved it ALMOST as much as the first book. Still a 5 Star read. It still had plenty of feels and it crushed my heart over and over again and I loved every minute of it. Sabaa you are such an amazing writer! I cannot wait to continue on with this series! Beautiful, Tortured, Brave, Monstrous (literally and figuratively) characters aplenty.

A Torch Against the Night picks up right where An Ember in the Ashes ended. We are immediately drawn into the story as Laia and Elias are desperately trying to find a way out of the city. They are about to start on their quest to free Laia's brother from Kauf prison, which is far up north. There end up being quite a few twists and turns along the way.

"You are a torch against the night - if you dare to let yourself burn."
I think I liked this one a little better than the first one, which rarely happens. But I felt that the characters sunk a little more into who they were and it was finally coming across on the page. However, I still had the same issue I had with the first one where I felt the length of the book.

The epic tale continues with this second installment of An Ember in the Ashes and I couldn't be more pleased. This book does an excellent job of picking up right where we left off and now we follow Elias and Laia as they try to get to Laia's brother and break him out of the prison. Of course this will not be as easy as can be because otherwise we would not have an epic tale. With Elias now poisoned the two have to face the fact that he will not be able to serve as Laia's protector and both will

Hands down one of the best series. I can't wait until next year! This book was as good as the first. in fact, I rarely reread books, but I might make an exception for this series because so many little things that you read in book one matter in this book, and probably the next book! Just amazing!!!
