01/29/2023: Reread! (Audiobook.)
This definitely has a different feel to it than The Folk of the Air series. That isn't a bad thing though. I am so overjoyed to return to Elfhame in this duology!
I loved the further exploration of Faerie in this book. I also really loved the additional history that we learn about Elfhame and Oak and Suren's ancestors. It was quite enlightening and really pumped me up for the next book.

I was very excited when I found out that Holly Black would be writing more in the world of Elfhame. For some reason, I haven't been able to connect with any of her other works outside of the The Cruel Prince series. It has been a few years since reading the original Folk of the Air trilogy so I can't remember a lot of the details. With this being a new stand-alone duology I thought that wouldn't be a problem but I think I was wrong. Events and characters from the first trilogy are constantly being referenced and it just kind of felt like I was talking to a group of people who have loads of history and private jokes that I can't join in with.

I have a feeling once I read the sequel I'll probably go back and rate this five stars.
I love Suren. She is feral and soft.
Oak needed more development. He didn't feel fully fleshed out-so that's what I'm looking forward to most in the sequel!.
Great returning to this world! ...more
