in this sequel to all of us villains, finley, briony, isobel, and reid race to end the tournament once and for all as alistair and gavin make an alliance to complete the tournament the right way and use the high magick for their own gain. the tournament will end one way or the other, and as it nears its end, the champions must re-evaluate their goals.

Talk about a finale!

When I first read All of Us Villains I was blown away by the setting and characters that filled this world. Definitely had some The Hunger Games vibes with the whole sending kids to die for an ultimate goal, but there was just so much more and I was hooked.

At the end of the previous book, the curse was falling apart around them - both from what Briony was doing with the relics and from the instability it now had. All seemed to be going righ Talk about a finale!

When I first read All of Us Villains I was blown away by the setting and characters that filled this world. Definitely had some The Hunger Games vibes with the whole sending kids to die for an ultimate goal, but there was just so much more and I was hooked.

At the end of the previous book, the curse was falling apart around them - both from what Briony was doing with the relics and from the instability it now had. All seemed to be going right, the champions were mostly going to work together to destroy the curse but then of course everything went wrong. Two of the champions end up cursed themselves, Hendry comes back from the dead and someone gets murdered. A hot mess.

So book two starts off with a bang. Word is out - some of the champions are trying to bring down the curse. Most of the book is with the champions split into two teams - one team to bring down the curse, the other to continue out the rules. As the book goes on, views get skewed. Everything is in that weird grey area and honestly, no one really knows what to do.

What I absolutely loved about this book were the characters. Each one felt so different from the other that I was never confused on who I was reading about - and that's hard with such a giant cast. I understood what everyone was working for and I felt attached to them. Obviously some more than others (Al, my sweet sunshine child). But then there were also the relationships that forged that i NEVER saw coming and I am 100% HERE FOR IT. I lived for these scenes, and I don't want to give it away, but if you read the book, you know what I'm talking about. Also freaking Hendry just ripping my heart out every time he was on the page.

This series laid out the facts and never really strayed from them. It's violent and brutal. There is no shortage of gore and horribleness. But I liked that the authors didn't shy away from the ugliness. These kids were flawed in so many ways but that made them more personable, more relatable. Overall it was a story about acceptance and belonging. I freaking loved it. And that ending? I thought that it fit the narrative perfectly. There was no way it could be all sunshine and rainbows and I think it would have diminished what the characters went through if it was. Props to the authors for taking it there.

Guys, I sobbed in this book. Like gulping sobs. It was fantastic and I highly recommend this duology. ...more

This is basically Alistair’s book. He shines in his story arc, all broody big brother protector. But the others… not so much. There’s a lot of forced romances in here, and I love a good romance, but does everyone need to pair up? It got brutal in here with Reid. I didn’t really like his character transformation (because he should have stayed a bad guy), but he goes through some things that probably need a content warning. He’s definitely the proud owner of the darkest chapters in this book. The This is basically Alistair’s book. He shines in his story arc, all broody big brother protector. But the others… not so much. There’s a lot of forced romances in here, and I love a good romance, but does everyone need to pair up? It got brutal in here with Reid. I didn’t really like his character transformation (because he should have stayed a bad guy), but he goes through some things that probably need a content warning. The character growth of everyone is pretty amazing, with Briony and Isobel as standouts, but I never really cared about their story arcs. The vested interest wasn’t there, which as a most of the story focuses around the characters, I wanted.
There’s constantly something going on in this book, so pacing-wise it’s fine, but there were parts that dragged for me. Because it’s very repetitive. Find a relic, use it against the stone pillar at a base, then defeat the magic feedback. There’s not even a struggle to find the bases, because they know where they all are and just use magic to travel there. Then they smash a relic. Cracking the magical failsafe is different each time, but again even when they’re being attacked it doesn’t seem insurmountable. Like it jumps back to the scene after another character has a chapter and everything is hunky dory and they’re just sitting on the floor with dead things around them despite being overwhelmed with two of them earlier, but one stopped to do something else and now ‘tada!’ The tension isn’t really in this. For life-stakes type scenarios, it was a bit old hat, and they spent a lot of time sitting around between actually doing anything. But most of it was enjoyable, because you didn’t know what was going to be thrown at them, and some of them were pretty incredible in the crazy stakes.
They seem to have unlimited magic stones in this one too. Even when they say they’re low or running out of Here to Theres, they always have some in the next scene, and enough to weigh them down. And they weren’t making more all the time, or restocking. And when they did make new spells up, they just kind of threw things together that weren’t in the recipe. I have watched Nailed It, it never works when you put in something else and make your own refinements.
Everything was a bit “there’s a magic for that” and they rarely had to do anything. Turns out a battle where you tell me what magic they throw and counter with each time isn’t up my alley for extended periods. Rounding up today.

In this sequel to All of Us Villains, the teens still standing work against each other as one group continues to try and win the trial, and the other group wants to end it all for good. Meanwhile, the blood veil has fallen and the rest of the city is eager to get their hands on the competitors.

I really enjoyed this! Oh my gosh Alistair is definitely my favorite character---no one is surprised. I'm trying not to give anything away ...more
