Let me tell you peeps…after reading Holly Black’s beautiful written angsty YA The Folk of the Air Series, I will be a forever fan. I love this woman’s writing, she’s got skills. So when I saw HB was coming out with a new Fantasy AND it was going to be her first adult book…well I almost fainted from the straight shot of giddiness that went to my brain.

Luckily I did not.😁 What I did do is start the countdown to when I could get my hands on a copy. And then I finally did!

Holly Black is an author I love but one who I flip back and forth with when it comes to their books. When I heard she was writing an adult novel, I was super excited to see what she would bring. And honestly, I wasn't disappointed but I also wasn't blown away.

Black's book takes us deep into the world of shadow magic. She creates this dark world where people will do anything to get a taste of magic, including stealing other people's shadows. I really loved the concept of thi ...more

I didn't particularly love Holly Black's The Cruel Prince series, but the premise of this one sounded too good to pass up. Unfortunately, it just wasn't for me. It dragged and dragged and dragged. Basically nothing happened for the first 50% of the book, and then we got a ton of new characters that don't seem to be hugely relevant to the story. More frustratingly, there was no clear explanation for why we have these shadows etc etc. All this world-building without basis lacked impact. Not my fav ...more
