Oh my god this was one of the best books I've read all year!
First of all, Yadriel is a complete and total Cinnamon Roll. I love him. With all my heart. He has had such a struggle with his entire brujx community as they can't come to terms with the fact that he is trans. This brings on such a struggle with him questioning his own place among the brujx and wondering if Lady Death will accept him as a true brujo. Of course she does, but sometimes he feels like that isn't good enough, considering ev ...more

For a debut novel, this was pretty good. It struggled with some redundancy in the first half that was pretty frustrating to get through and I had already figured out what was going on before I reached the halfway mark, but the second half was a lot better and I ended up really enjoying the end.
I absolutely loved the characters, especially Julien. The story was amazing and I loved the concept and the love and acceptance between Julien and Yads was beautiful.

-Oh my god. So good. Such good use of tropes and so much yearning. I can totally see why Chaima was recommending this book to everyone!
-I called the twist but I'm not even mad about it because rest of the book was so good.
-Made me emotional but in a good way.
-Deserves the hype that it got/is getting. ...more

Yadriel is part of the brujx community (literal translation of brujo/-a is sorcerer.) Brujos have the capability to raise the dead. Brujas have the capability to heal. Yadriel is trans and yearns to be acknowledged as a brujo despite his family's reluctance on the break of tradition, believing that his biological sex at birth was the defining factor.
After his cousin goes missing, Yadriel makes attempts to prove himself as a brujo and in the process falls in love with a ghost boy.

I really enjoyed this book!
I think it was a breath of fresh air to have cast a transgender boy as the powerful lead of this book.
Yadriel is determined to become a brujo even if his family doesn't agree. His father believes since he was born a girl he cannot be accepted by Lady Death as anything other than a bruja. But Yadriel and his friend Maritza perform the ceremony anyway and it works, and the spirit they summon is the school's bad boy Julian who doesn't even know he is dead.

Yadriel and Maritza are BEST friends. I absolutely loved the interaction between these two, and the support and love they have for each other. It was hard, bit I'm sure so realistic, to see the trials Yadriel has with his family dead-naming him and not acknowledging his gender.
there is a mystery with missing people that needs solving, and Yadriel tries to help. When Yadriel finds a ghost while looking for the missing man, he begins to get to know Julian. too bad Julian is a ghost.

This book was one where I read in 2 sitting but the 2 sittings were 6 months apart.
I liked it but it was stressful because I didn't know if there would be a happy ending. ...more
