I gave this book 5 stars for 2 reasons:
1) It's funny, and it is my kind of funny
2) It is so damn satisfying and validating.
To be completely honest, for a good chunk of my reading time, I was convinced that this was a 3.5 stars or a 4 stars at best, because it was hilarious and it was delightful, but around the halfway point I started to lose a bit of interest, it felt like things dragged a bit. This was a cute read in which I adored the characters and their world.
Evie was sassy and the villain with his droll humour was entertaining.
The side characters were interesting and I liked the found family aspect of the plot. It's a good mix of action, laughter, romance, emotion and fantasy.
There is a thread of mystery running through the book and that managed to surprise me.
It's the first of a series so a lot of plot lines are unresolved of course but it sets up the narrative quite well and ...more

I genuinely loved this! The author packed so much into a really succinct and well written story. It was a slow burn romance, lots of denial of feelings, a villain story, fun, funny, and adorable. There was a mystery that had my wholly engrossed, adventure, plus side characters that I genuinely felt endeared to like I’d known them. It’s not easy to build a world and cast of characters in such a short book but she really pulled it off. I’m just glad there are more coming because I need it.

I have to admit I was a bit skeptical going in but I loved this! 4.5 stars! I didn't find it funny, nor was there any banter, but it did feel cozy while also being a bit more than a 'slice of life everyday' story. I need the second, this ended on such a good note.

“Are we changing the subject because you're embarrassed that you were an Evil Overlord in Distress?”

Such a fun read! I enjoyed the "cozy fantasy" vibes and the silly banter. The slow burn was believable, even if I would have preferred a little more speed. I was surprised by the mystery's conclusion, but I'm unsure if it was as believable as it was meant to be. There are several ends that need tying up!
