I've seen people criticize this as fan service, and you know what? It just might be, but I'm not mad at it. I loved this book. I'm going to be honest. Back in around 2019 when we heard we were getting another Hunger Games book, we all wanted it to be Haymitch's story. And I was a little disappointed that it was Snow's. I didn't care about him. So I was ecstatic when this was finally announced. I knew it was going to break me, but I just didn't know how much.

Spoiler alert: I was absolutely not ready for the emotional damage that I was going to take with this book.
Wow. This book was really good. It definitely gave me a new perspective on Haymitch as a character and cleared up some of his actions in regards to how he acted with Katniss. I do have a very clear memory of not being a fan of Haymitch/being annoyed with Haymitch's attitude while reading the first book and this book really redeemed him for me. Pretty much the same formula as all the other books in the series (not a bad thing, they're hugely successful for a reason!).
I really enjoyed getting more of a backstory for Haymitch and was pleasantly surprised to also get to see a few more familiar faces from Catching Fire.
Unfortunately the nature of a prequel means that you already know the ending which does mean that it packs a bit less of a punch.
Overall a very enjoyable book and a pleasure to revisit Panem. ...more

Loved this!!! 4.5/5!!

Another fantastic installment of the Hunger Games. This one featuring Haymitch when he was in the games. I really enjoyed this because many of the connections are being made in this book to the original Hunger Games. I wanted to love this as much as Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but it didn't get there for me. I think I may have just really been invested in the human element of Snow being revealed.
That being said, this was still a fantastic book and a great addition to the series. ...more

Haymitch Abernathy
I didn't read the prequel with Snow's story. I just wasted interested, and I'm still not. However, this book fits seamlessly into the world that Suzanne Collins built, and it ties all the books together effortlessly, even the one I didn't read according to the info I got from my daughter.
Not only did this give us more into Haymitch's past, but it rounded out a lot of the characters that we've come to know, love, and even maybe despise a little. And my burning question of (view ...more

Devastating and wonderful ay the same time. I love Haymitch as a character and I am so happy we got to read about his Games. Even knowing how things are for him starting the original trilogy, there were things in this book still took me by surprise and it was such an emotional read. I also loved all the little connections to the original trilogy and the prequel before this one.
