I wanted to read Haymitch’s story and waited quite impatiently for it to come to fruition. Knowing everything that I did, it still broke me! I had an idea what was going to happen, but I didn’t expect the sheer cruelty of it. While I think I would have liked to his story without knowing anything about Haymitch; I don’t think the story would have held my interest or been as powerful.

I expected to learn who Haymitch was and what made him so cynical. I definitely learned what made him into the man

So my least favorite thing about prequels is that the reader already has a bunch of information about the story that hasn’t occurred yet. Especially in a book like this where the main character is participating in a death game and we know he survives. So that part of it, not super great.

Other than that though, this might be my favorite Hunger Games book. The love triangle in the original series annoyed the hell out of me and I find Hamish to actually be a more likable character than Katniss mos

In my heart, I knew that’s how it would end, but I didn’t want to admit it!

This is the first PREQUEL book. I’ve read for this series. And I really appreciate how it provides additional Panam lore to the original series. It also Feels a lot more grown-up and a lot more detailed than the original books, but at the same time easy to read and a page turner for sure.
